Applicators supplied with Rogaine 5 Rogaine 5% bottleUpjohn's new formula promises to make 5% Minoxidil available to the masses.  Prior to now a prescription was required and the formula had to be custom made bya  pharmacy.  Those days are over and soon anybody will be able to use Minoxidil 5%.  Upjohn's formula is consistent and of high quality and should be an improvement over 2% formulas.  Upjohn's formula is oiler than Dr. Lee's formula but not as oily as some other formulas.  It takes longer to dry than 2% Minoxidil due to less alcohol, however users of 2% Minoxidil should be able to tolerate this.  The pricing may keep many users away unless Upjohn offers introductory pricing.  If Upjohn were smart they would drop Rogaine 2%'s price to be competitive with generic Minoxidil and price their 5% formula similarly to their old 2% pricing.   They would then have a lot of people moving up to the newer formula and those who stick with 2% have an incentive to buy their 2% formula over the generics, but who knows what they will do.  It should be availble around the end of 1997 or the beginning of 1998.  Unlike over the counter 2% Minoxidil, which was available prior to 1996 by an approved prescription, there will be no generic forms available since it is a "new" drug which was not previously approved for prescription distribution.   After three years, generics will probably be allowed.

11/20/97:  Looks like Upjohn is listening to me... their pricing scheme is exactly as I suggested!

1/5/98:  I have now reviewed the US version of Rogaine Extra Strength.  Like the overseas version, it is a bit oiler than the 2% formula.   The US version ships with a dropper and a pump spray.  In addition, currently Upjohn is shipping 'starter' packs that come with a video with Mike Holmgren and a 4oz sample bottle of Progaine Shampoo.  The product retails for $28.95 for a single bottle but can be found a few dollars lower or higher at different stores.  A multipack is available from the large warehouse stores such as Sam's or Costco for a lower price per bottle for a 3 bottle pack.

Pricing Around $26-30/bottle from New Zealand.
In the US:
$28.50 for one bottle retail (Have heard of prices as low as $24 or as high as $30 depending on location, average $28-29)
$49.99 for two bottles retail
Available Now available over the counter in the United States.  Will probably be approved prescription in some countries.  You can order it from New Zealand where it is also approved for over the counter sale.  The following web sites will are now carrying it:

Online-Hair-Pharmacies ($26-30 including shipping)
SmallWorld ($28.50 plus shipping)
Pharmacy Geoff (New Zealand)
