what? finasteride is the technical name of the drug. propecia is the common name for 1mg of the drug, used for hair loss. proscar is the common name for 5mg of the drug, used for prostrate.

take 5 propecia tabs your dosing yourself with proscar, a rather expensive way to go.

quarter a proscar tab and you've got 1.25mg of finasteride, more or less.

this is your hair. this is your hair on propecia. any questions?

For all you people who take a Proscar 5mg tablet and chop it up into 4 pieces....well.. did you know that the active ingredient in the Proscar pill is NOT evenly spread through out the tablet???? This means that one Quarter pill may contain for example...2 mg of finasteride..and another Quarter might only contain..say...0.5mg....Be careful!

Also....if you compare the prices of 100 tablets of Proscar and 100 tablets of Propecia....The Proscar is just a little more expensive...so..I take proscar 5 mg once a day.

NOW...before you say that clinical trials have shown that 1mg of finasteride reduces as much DHT as 5mg...well....a 5mg dose is DEFINITELY more potent then a 1mg dose.....The reason Propecia is only 1mg is because most man using it are Young and still have plans to have children.....Merck doesn't want to take the chance of any lawsuits with regards to the drugs possible..but slight chance at causing birth defects in male fetuses...thus the 1 mg dose!
