Can anyone help with Propecia Side Effects?

Hi! I have been taking propecia for 4 years, up and till now with no problems :-) However, 2 weeks ago I felt a painful hard swelling inside my left nipple (The swelling is not visible from the outside but I can feel it inside and it is hard and painful if I press it too hard - it is basically the size of a peanut, but a bit flatter :-))

Anyway, a doctor said he felt it was from the propecia (even though I didn't have any other problems for 4 years...) so I have discontinued the use of propecia.

I still have the swollen pain in the nipple (it didn't get any worse), it has been 2 weeks since I stopped Propecia - so how long will it take from the side-effects to go away? (any doctors on this message board - my doctor didn't know anything about propecia, he had to look it up in a book, very comforting huh?!!!)

I guess basically my question is: How long is the waiting period to tell whether Propecia was the cause or perhaps something else?

I was also curious as to why only one nipple got inflammed and not the other... Has anybody had any experiences with this kinda thing?

I plan to try Saw Palmetto after the swelling in the nipple goes away :-)

Ciao! Mr T

Will Dude...Finisteride(the active ingredient in Propecia has a half life of roughly 8 hours. That means, 8 hours after your first dose, half of the drug has been flushed from your body. You have been on it for 4 years so you probably have a fair amount accumulated in your body tissues. Expect anywhere from 3 to 5 months to be totally Propecia free.

With regards to the swelling in your breast, I can't really say, maybe a few months after the above stated time. However, in a small amount of people, the side effects may persist and in very very rare cases be permanent. However, I very much doubt that is the case with Propecia because the dose is very small(only 1mg).

I would advice against using Saw Palmetto....that may only make your symptoms worse.

Yeah I know that Saw.p has similar side effects listed. But a smaller percentage of people are affected by them, so I'm hoping for the best.

The thing is, I was really happy with my propecia/rogaine5 combination - now I feel a bit naked :-) without the propecia. I still have all my hair though - I started using rogaine/propecia as soon as I noticed that my hair was not as thick as it used to be. So I guess I'll wait a few months and see what happens... damn I was really happy using that propecia, blast! :-)

Why don't you just cut back on your dosage then..maybe take a tablet once every other day..and see how that goes....

I've never seen Propecia prescribed as 1 every 2 days, so I'm not sure if there is a doctor that would recommend that kind of usage. Any doctors on this message board? I suspect it might not have any effect if it is only taken every two days... but maybe it would work... dunno - anybody successfully tried it?

Try this again, pushed the wrong button on my last reply.. I've been on finasteride (5mg) (Proscar) now for almost 5 1/2 years.A little over a year of using it my breasts started swelling and becoming quite sensitive around the nipple area, as well my ejaculate was noticably less and quite clear.Went and saw my doctor and was told that what I was experiencing was a rare side effects. He said that the side effects should stop within a short time I continued on taking the same dosage. The side effects never went away but did not progress any further. Considering the very positive results in my hairloss problem I decided it was a small price to pay.Evedently what I experienced was very rare and only a small percentage are effected this way

What you are experencing is GYNO. Due to elevated estrogen levels from taking Propecia and you have started to grow breats.

There are drugs that can reverse the effects of estrogen by effectivly blocking receptors that estrogen binds to. Arimidex is the strongest anti-e around and could help your situation. Long term use of anti e's is not known but it has a good track record thus far.

Yo raeneligan!

Hey, you said both of your breasts were affected? Well, my breasts didn't swell... only the left nipple has gotten hard inside - like I said about the size of a peanut (but squashed a bit)... My breasts are the same size as ever.

You mean to say that your breasts have been sore for more than a year now? Or did the pain go away? I'm not sure I'd want to go through that, especially since I'm into sports :-(

I don't want to f%^k around with my health too much and taking an anti-e to combat too much e because another drug took too much testosterone away sounds a bit too wierd :-)

I wonder, I was taking saw palmetto in addition to the propecia (but not very regularly), basically I'd buy a bottle of pills and use it up and then maybe a month would pass before I bought another one. Perhaps when the swelling in the nipple is passed, I could try propecia again and not take the palmeto pills at all... I could try and talk to my doctor, but you may have noticed, as I have that most doctors have ZERO experience with propecia and I might aswell ask my dog instead :-)

Yo Mr T

Yes both breasts were effected, the soreness did leave but to a certain point the enlargement remained. Yes I agree with you that taking one drug to combat another, than one to combat that is a little too much!!! that is why I just left well enough alone.I would not take the pameto pills and would try the propecia again and monitor myself while taking it. It does seem that alot of doctors have very little experience in dealing with proscar, when I first approached my doctor I hade to take him a newspaper article I read about the stuff.

Damn dude, you're so right! Most doctors are really clueless... Also most doctors look at you with the kinda: "You're so vain, what's wrong with going bald?"

I've decided to what and see if my little nipple bump goes away and then I may try Propecia again...
