Minoxidil.....Friend or Foe?

I have been using Spectral DNC and Rogaine Foam just on my vertex, middle of scalp and hairline, temples for about 8 months. Been on Propecia 1mg for a year and I notice only where I put the minoxidil products my existing hairs which were thick now seem wispy and thin almost like split ends. The rest of my hair where I dont apply it is very thick. My scalp is not irritated, I have not redness or flaking. I use Nano Shampoo alternately with Tricomin shampoo. I do see regrowth at my hairline but very thin hairs. My widows peak thinned out but is now being replaced with new hairs but thin ones. I really think rogaine may help regrow hair but also thin out your thick good hair in the process. I use the hairmax laser comb and my hair seems thicker immediately after I use it. I am upgrading to the aculas laser because I respond well to the laser. Should I drop minoxidil treatment or not? I had thicker hair before I started Propecia and minoxidil and now its just thinner in the areas I put the minoxidil. I thought that combo would help keep the hair that I have and prevent or at least slow down the thinning process. Or maybe in a year, I am wrong and those new hairs will fill in and things will seem better??? any one been down this road of sorrow?

I've been down a simliar road. If you got good results right away from minoxidil, then chances are you will get good results again. It seems as though I have areas that thin out, but then they eventually go back to normal. Just make sure to use your treatments every day. Remember, your hair might look pretty thin sometimes, but the key is long-term maintenance, keep that in mind.

I lost a lot of hair using Rogaine. I kept using it hoping my hair would grow back thicker, but that was not the case. If it doesn't seem to be working for you, I'd advise to give it up ASAP.

Your hair treatment regimen is so comprehensive (with some agents that are proven to be effective and others that may not be) that I don't see how you can pin your hair regression on the minox specifically.

We do know that minox (and most other truly effective agents) reach a maximum effectiveness at 12-18 months, so I wouldn't discontinue minox just yet. BTW, are you using it twice per day as required? Don't eliminate one of the daily doses of minox to apply the DNC. Many patients do not respond to minox with a single daily dose. After 18 months go by, you can then assess the effectiveness of the minox and then decide whether to continue with it or not.

Incidentally, the laser can't possibly thicken your hair "immediately"; probably the physical effect of the laser, while combing, is drying and separating your hair which makes it appear thicker.

Why not eliminate some of this stuff and conduct a fair test with just the Propecia and the minox for 18 months? Then you will know what is/is not working and be in a better position to spend more $ on other things.

I can't give feedback on Rogaine Foam, laser combs or some of the other products mentioned, but have received Dr. Lee's new 12.5% minoxidil solution. I've used it since it became available, and its' all that Dr. Lee promised. It feels similar to his non-greasy 5% minoxidil solution, and after it dries (takes about five minutes), leaves my hair feeling clean, and best of all, leaves enough 'body' to allow for easy styling. I absolutely love the stuff. I also like that the high minoxidil concentration is in liquid (solution) form. It seems to penetrate easily, and doesn't leave a bunch of useless minoxidil crystals on my scalp. It's also relatively inexpensive, all things considered.

ronlev, are you saying Spectral DNC is ineffective and its better just to stick to Rogaine Foam twice daily. I use Spectral DNC am and the Foam pm. I know people say use the foam because there are proven studies published its effective. Do you also think 12.5% minoxidil is better to use than 5%. I agree with you about the instant effect the laser comb has on my hair. Do you have any thoughts on what causes the hair to be so thick after you shampoo and dry it, then it becomes thin and dull as the day goes even when a use a light volumizer or gel. I think the hair strands must dehydrate and stick together as the day goes on. Lastly, I still think lasers are still promising. What is your view???

I experience the same thing (without the laser). When I start the day I use a hair-thickening shampoo (I use L'Oreal Vive Pro for men, but there are other similar thickening shampoos on the market as well) and this gives me excellent results in the AM. But the hair loses body as the day progesses. The reason for this is that normal scalp oil begins to build up on the hair, weighing it down, so that by the end of the day the hair is lifeless and stuck together.

I've discovered one way to reduce this problem is to make sure that I apply the hair medication as much as possible on the scalp and not on the hair, so there is no residue for the hairs to get stuck together on; and not to massage the hair medication into the hair, which also tends to make the hair stick together. One advantage of the Rogaine foam is that it is less likely to cause this problem, even if you do massage the contents into the hair. I am not familiar with Spectral DNC, but I assume it is causing the sticky hair problem as most other hair medications do.
