Propecia going on month 4, questions for IH, Jacob or anybody else. Just thought I should share my propecia experience thus far. I'm currently starting month four tomorrow. My hair has gotten alot worse. I dont want to blame the propecia but I cant help to notice that my hairloss has become far more agressive. In the last 3 months I have lost more hair than I did when I first noticed I was balding. That was back in December of 06. My problem is a receeding hairline at the temples. I thought I should point out that the most agressive side is my left temple. The skin has become spotted red where I have lost hair. I'm guessing this is inflammation. As for my right temple its remained fairly intact for the last 2 months. And I dont see the inflammation I see on my left temple. I just started using Nizoral last week and it seems as if the inflammation dissapeared. Hopefully this helps control the aggressiveness. My front hairline has also become noticeably thinner. Side effects began when I started supplementing with (3 weeks ago)L-Arginine as well. Ive noticed a slight loss in libido and oily skin; but the oily skin went away after 3 days. The loss in libido is slight and usually not a problem but its definately there. I'm planning on getting a blood test next week and I wanted to post the results on here. What kind of information should I look for (or ask for) when it comes to my blood test? I know things like DHT levels, and testerone levels will be important, but I'm sure there are more. The point of this is to analyze my current hormonal status to see if propecia is causing my hairloss more harm than good. Any other opinions are welcome.

Legend07 - The red blotches indicate high IGF-1 (drop the arginine if you're still taking it). Decreasing DHT too strongly can result in a deficiency in 3-beta androstanediol. It is 3-beta androstanediol that is mostly responsible for a healthy libido. If it were me, I'd go a more natural root, where DHT signalling factors are abated and inflammation and estrogen are controlled.

Immortal, Would nizoral cause the red blotches due to high IGF-1 levels to disapear? I started using Nizoral and continued with the arginine and they seem to have gone away. I think it was inflammation. On your site you described it as raised bumps on the forehead. This was jsut discoloration of the skin with a bit of itchiness and it was limited to the section were I was losing hair most rapidly which is my left temple. My take on it would be that its inflamation but im way to new to this whole balding thing to really know. Also let me know what kind of information I need to get out of the blood test (testosterone levels, SHBG levels)?

I, too, have noticed little red spots, right at the base of some hairs in my ever-retreating hairline. It seems that after I consume whey protein (I'm on a low-GI diet) these red spots become VERY prominant. IH, can whey protein increase IGF-1, or does anybody have any links to studies which may shed some light??? Isn't whey made from milk protein, which is a dairy product? And doesn't dairy increase IGF-1???

I also have had the same thing happen...im on prop 5 at .5mg a day and have noticed my hairline has gotten progressively worse. I also experience itchiness at my temples. It is mainly my right side however. Most people say the shedding should only last 2-3 months so ive been pretty worried about it.

"It seems that after I consume whey protein (I'm on a low-GI diet) these red spots become VERY prominant. " Damn I really hope this isnt the case. I just started my workout routine and whey is essential to it. Whovian, what you have described is exactly what I have (little red spots on the base of my receeding hairline). This seemed to go away with nizoral and it was there before I started to supplement with L-Arginine. Are you sure what your experiencing is not inflammation? And whats your current regimen consist of? By the way check your whey protein ingredients. You'll notice that they add alot of essential amino acids. My whey protein also has arginine (not sure how much per scoop).

I'm absolutely sure it IS inflammation, I'm just questioning if it was brought on by consumption of the whey. Whey does contain most, if not all of the aminos, including arginine. Arginine and Lysine when taken together in large doses have proven to increase HGH production in many people. HGH is great for anti-aging, but with it comes elevated IGF-1 levels, which is bad for hair. I want to know if this is the reason for the IGF-1 spike, or because whey is made from milk proteins, and dairy are linked to elevated IGF-1 levels. Either way it sucks, because I love to work out and feel that I need to take in more protein than some people. I don't consume a lot of beef, and I get really tired of chicken and pork. Good fish is very expensive, and I don't care much for the taste, anyway, so whey protein is always my backup when I don't feel like meat. I do consume legumes, seeds, and nuts, but you can only eat so much of that as well. Those red spots always come right before I begin to lose more hair around my hairline. I'm thinking of adding Niz 2% cream to my arsenal. Just to put around the hairline to see if it does anything.

i work out, and i have significantly elevated igf-1 levels, which correlate with my crown balding. so i stopped whey protein, they do significantly increase igf-1 levels. especially when combined with milk (soy somewhat, dairy especially so). after i workout, i just eat breakfast, a high protein breakfast. seems to make sense to me! with a low gi/high protein diet you don't need a protein shake as well anyway.

Sadly its only now that I've come to realize how important controlling inflammation can be. My case is proof enough to convince me of this. What supplements can one take to help against inflammation?
