DIfference between Nizoral shampoo and cream? I've heard that it if you use Nizoral shampoo too much (every day) that it has a drying effect and can thin out your hair. Is this not the case with the 2% cream also? What's in the shampoo that has that effect that the cream doesn't have?

I'm afraid I haven't tried the cream. But maybe you should reverse the question..."what's in the cream thats not in the shampoo?". I use Aloe Vera gel seperately to avoid the dryness. I have to wonder if the cream base ingredients moisturize your scalp.

I tried it on my nose for eczema and it dried it out more. But I'm more concerned about what people say about the shampoo thinning out their hair if used too much. Is it just a cosmetic effect?

I'm sure it is cosmetic, I plan on cutting back to every other day in 3 months time. I'll Alternate it with another natural shampoo or possibly a zinc based like "head and shoulders". The dryness probably makes the hair more brittle and subject to breakage possibly making the hair appear thinner, however the drying effect also reduces the sebum. The answer is probably to cut back the frequency at a certain point in your regime but maintain the sebum reducing effect. Even the manufacturer tells you to cut back frequency after an initial period to maintain its "anti-dandruff" properties. I definitely do not believe that Nizoral should be used on a daily basis long term (ie. after 6-8 months). Thats just my opinion, other people would differ with me. You might also consider introducing a good moisturizing conditioner after shampooing or using the cream. I use the Aloe Vera gel after my shower in the morning, massaging it into my and blow drying and styling it after, seems to be fuller that way. Other people use the Aloe Vera as a hairstyling gel. There are several "recipies" for it being used as a styling gel online.

Nizoral shampoo contains Sodium Laureth Sulfate, the 'less evil' cousin of Sodium Laurel Sulfate. Both are reported to be damaging to hair, although the Laureth less so than the Laurel. This is one ingredient not included in the cream, along with other detergents/foaming agents. I used 2% Niz everyday for a month then cut back to EOD without problem. I don't suffer from dry scalp, however, so this might be a whole other issue for you. People who use the cream usually put it on a wet scalp in the shower, let it sit for about 3 mins, then rinse out with water and shampoo as normal. I am almost out of Niz 2%, and it looks like the prices have gone up from $14/bottle to $20/bottle at the online pharmacy I use. So I may just try the cream next!!!

Not speaking from personal experience, but have read quite a few posts from people experiencing major sheds from using Niz everyday. I use it every 3 days as fungi and excess sebum maintenance and get a weird minor scalp itch the day after. Anyone else experience this?

Hi Leva, I did too, which was the main reason for introducing the Aloe Vera gel into my regime, probably the drying effect everyone talks about. Any advice on what to use for a shampoo to alternate with Niz?

Well tanker, many will disagree, but I think Nioxin has been a vital part of my regimen in slowing things down. I started using Nioxin as soon as I noticed abnormal shedding. That was when I was 19. I have continued with Nioxin till this day minus a 2 year break and I am now 29 (30 in March) and barely a norwood 1.5-2. Keep in mind I used the system religiously including the shampoo, scalp therapy, scalp treatment and follicle booster. This regimen is a quite a hit to the wallet. Two years ago after seeing my hairline slowly disintegrate I decided to quit Nioxin because of the cost and the fact I was still loosing hair at a very slow pace. In those two years I lost more hair than I did in five and I am sorry I ever stopped. so long story short, I am now back on Nioxin, although only the shampoo and scalp therapy rotated every three days with Nizoral along with some custom topicals because I believe there is something beneficial there regardless of the ridiculous cost. Remember this is only my opinion and there are guys out there that use 9 dollar organic shampoos from Whole Foods or other with some of their own additions that have gotten results. I should also include the fact that I was on Propecia for around 3 years in that time but do not think it did anything except give me side effects.

Thanks Leva, I am going to continue the Niz daily for about 3 more months and then start alternating.
