Finasteride idea/question

Apparently it takes a few months after discontinuing fin (after using it for many months) to start shedding and losing hair again. I wonder if its a good idea to do something like go on and off of it for 6-12 months at a time. The idea is, once you have been using it for 6-12 months, it should be working... and if you were to discontinue it, you will still have the lingering effects. Then after a few months when you start to notice hair loss is getting bad, start it again and continue the cycle? Maybe this is a good way to save money and reduce the amount of drug you put in your body?

i dobt it. cos ur body would know the difference.it takes 6 months to really start doing something, and 6 months for that to drop off again, if u stop it for 6 months, it would then take another 6 months once u restart it to start doing something again. ur better off reducing dose to .5 mg or something

Another question about finasteride: if it seems to work well for at least half of the people who take it according to studies, why don't more people on this forum take fin? Are alot of you taking it/took it and it did not work? I am just curious why more people are not happy enough with fin.

i realise that it can regrow some hair, and stop further progression, but the fact is the side effects which r severe seem to happen to alot higher percentage than 2%, and pretty much everyone here that has taken fin. once has stopped it because of sides.

Also long term use by some has shown that all regrowth stops after no more than 5 yrs, (probably alot sooner) and u end up reverting back to the way it was anyway.

i dont know y, maybe its a tolerance thing, maybe ur body just learns how to convert DHT in a roundabout way, i dont know enough about it.

but to me it just seems pointless. I think the others will agree

FWIW i DID take it for about 2 packets of 30 tab proscar which equates to 60 x 5 = 300 days, and i got nothing. no shedding to indicate somethings happening, no regrowth, ne effect watsoever.

i honestly dont think i have MPB from genetics, i think i have lost alot from seboraic dermititis and heavy metal poisoning, and probably smoking, and head ache medications etc.

sure i am receding in typical mpb shape, but i honestly think any hairloss in males will recede in that shape due to the pattern of our shoulder, neck and scalp muscles,

Minimi, as soon as you stop taking finasteride, DHT will start attaching to the follicle's androgen receptors at "full speed". Finasteride has about 6 hours half life in the body. So after a short while (possibly a matter of days), there will be negligible amounts of finasteride left. The fact that it will take 6 months or so for the effects TO SHOW doesn't mean you're protected for that time. Once your hair starts falling out, the follicles have already become severly "damaged". There is no guarantee you'll be able to save them by going on finasteride again.

Oh, and don't base your opinion of finasteride on internet forums. That will give you a really biased perspective. Remember that people are usually here because the regular treatments are not working good enough for them. Those for whom it works have no reason to be here. Basically you will encounter a vocal minority, the "whiners" and poor responders on forums. Many extrapolate the fact that it did't work *for them* to mean that "it doesn't work." It's a classic fallacy. Naturally, that doesn't mean that you should believe everything the big pharmas tell you. They will try to paint a pretty picture to make money. Just be level headed.

Thanks P___, you comments were very reassuring. Maybe some good news for people just starting to loose hair and thinking about fin: hopefully hair cloning will become a reality in the next few years, which seems like the best solution. Fin may be a good temporary solution until this new technology is a reality, especially for those who have sideffects to fin or just dont like taking drugs for the rest of their life. BTW, here is an interesting article I found recently about hair cloning, nothing really new, but informative none the less

One thing to distinguish between is drug physical half life levels in the body vs drug _effect_ half lives the two concepts are completely different.

In the case of finasteride it is a competitive inhibitor of 5 AR type 2.It takes "awhile" to recover the enzyme levels after you have inhibited them.

Bryan Shelton has graphs around somewheres on the web showing this.Basically, from what I remember you can take 1 mg finasteride intermittantly say about every 7(?) days before it ever reaches back up to baseline levels. You dont want to reach baseline levels but say every 3 to 4 days you could pulse finasteride.

Interesting take on this one....i am 41 yr old male and have taken fin for 3 yrs before trying out dutasteride about 5 months ago...in all honesty when i started i was shedding big style and prob would have lost the rest after 18 months but fin did do it for me...regrowth aint much but at least i seem to have kept what i had before...i have had no sides...libido still strong! But, i guess theres always a nagging feeling that putting chemicals into your body each day aint the best thing in the world to do...would welcome an alternative idea...
