Is there any evidence that Rogaine can cause an increase in hair loss. I used Rogaine for approximately 18 months eventually switching to extra strength Rogaine - I developed an extremely itchy scalp with the extra strength Rogaine - can a reaction like this cause an increase in hair loss ? Is it safe to continue with Rogaine ?

Re: Can Rogaine cause an increase in hair loss ?

Many women I've spoken to say there is a 4-6 week shedding period when you first start. Also, don't use any 5% minox execpt the Upjohn Rogaine. I went to see Dr. Vera Price a little while ago and she asked me about this. It turns out, only Upjohn has the patent to make the 5%...which really didn't bother me until I told her the minox I was using had very little propylene glycol. I never liked this because it made my hair look greasy. She said, that's what minoxidil is soluable in and without it, it would be almost impossible to deliver it in a stable form!!

I immediatly switched to the Upjohn and noticed an immediate dramatic shedding start. I'm about 4-5 weeks into it. I've been told to stick it out, it will slow down, and many women at least have had good results. If you're a guy, you may want to talk to you doctor about getting propecia or proscar.

Minoxidil is a unique molecule and shouldn't matter if it is used in rogaine or something else, proplyene glycol is used in most solutions you will find, just in a decreased amount, which also shouldn't matter and has also been found to be substitutable with glycerine when there is an alergic reaction to PG, most doctor's agree with this. I'm not one to pass accusations, but didn't Vera Price conduct some of the clinical trials for upjohn or have some tie to the company. Sounds like she may have a little bias in her statements. I agree with Johny. Minoxidil is effective in a variety of vehicles. Community Drug Pharmacy (hairlosspharmacy.com) is a highly reputable pharmacy that custom compounds all kinds of versions/strengths of Minoxidil. They are mandated by law to make the solutions correctly and effective in terms of making sure the "molecules" or active ingredients is stable.

If your getting any increased itching with Minoxidil I recommend 2% Nizoral Shampoo or Dexpanthanol. Both have been excellent additions to my routine as I now have little to none of the itching many complain about with high strength Minoxidil formulations. FYI I use strengths as high as 10-15% regularly.

I'm thinking of ordering Dr.Lee's normal 5% Minox. You have the choice of ordering it without propylen glycol. What are the pros and cons of Minox without PG?

There's a reason minoxidil is offered in PG. W/out PG you may not be getting minoxidil in a stable form. I've ordered both and the benifit of getting it w/out PG is its not so oily feeling and dries stiffer giving you more body, but you gamble the odds of getting the full benifit of the product.

Re: Can Rogaine cause an increase in hair loss ?

Minoxidil has been known to cause shedding for up to 3 to 4 weeks. Usually the shedding is not that noticable. If you have noticiable shedding it is most likely due to an increase in the dryness/dandruff level of your scalp. Propylene glycol can be very irritating to the scalp, a good portion of people are actually allergic to it.

As for doctor Lee's brand, there are two choices for Minoxidil, with propylene glycol and without. The Minoxidil without propylene glycol is for people who are allergic to the stuff. It has the same oil like feeling as normal rogain and uses a substitute for the propylene glycol to stabilize the formula.

The Minoxidil with propylene glycol feels more like hair spray and dries quicker.

Propylene glycol is used to stabilize the product and increase the shelf life. Rogain's shelf life is something like 2 years, so they might have a bit of over kill on the propylene glycol, and you may actually be able to get away with a version of the stuff that has less.

If you have flakey dry scalp or dandruff it is very important to remedy this situation, it is pretty doubtful that you will see good results until you do. Many treatments, such as Minoxidil actually cause this situation by irritating your scalp.

Many people say that Nizoral Shampoo is great for stopping dry scalp, and as an added bonus the 2% version actually has been known to grown back hair.

If you just want to apply rogain in cerian areas will it still work if you swab it on with a cotton swab or cuetip and if it causes shedding will it be limited only to the areas it is applied to or will it cause general shedding all over.
