hello--

I'm only 21 and I've been losing hair since I was 16. It's mostly been in the form of a receding hairline until now, which I could deal with, but now it's starting to thin on the top in general, which ain't so cool.

I am now entering into this overwhelming world of hair-loss solutions. I am considering proceeding with the standard extra-strength rogaine solution, over the counter. I feel like I should be watching out for tricks, however...it seems kind of too good to be true...and if it works, why are there so many thousands of other treatments? Please tell me what to look out for here. Any guidance is appreciated.

Thanks, Matt

Re: basic rogaine question

Matt, Rogaine will not work for everybody, but for majority it does do something in terms of maintaining or regrowth. Hopefully when Dusteride comes out in sept or oct, hopefully it will be the next best thing for hairloss, and be more effective then minoxial (rogaine) or propecia.

Re: basic rogaine question

Matt, I have been fighting hairloss for 8 years so I would like to offer you some advice. Get some shampoo with has a DHT cleanser like DR. Lee's regrowth shampoo or Revivogen. Use minoxidil(5%) with Retin-A at night after you shampoo. You may want to use minoxidil in the morning along with your night application. If you start to have irritation discontinue use of minoxidil with Retin-A in the morning and go with regular strength without the Retin-A. AS far as Propecia is concerned it mainly only inhibits the type of DHT that does not cause hairloss. But some people claim it helps them. Give it try for 6 months and if it does not work do not waste your money on continual use. Frontal hairloss is not effected by propecia but it may help on the top or back. These are the only products which may help. Other products are just scams. I have spent thousands of dollars on these scams. FNS is another scam that soon everyone will discover. Until a reputable company can come out with a product that provides some conclusive results, give my program a try, you might be surprised with your results. Dutasteride may be our only hope. It is suposed to be released later this year. It does block the DHT which causes hairloss or so they claim. Frontal hairloss is aggressive and when they can stop it they will find the cure for hairloss.

Re: basic rogaine question

You'll find that Rogaine as well as generic versions to be very greasy. I'd suggest Dr. Lee's Minoxidil solutions, his are very clean and leave you hair much nicer.

I've had excellent results with the following program; 1/4 Proscar tablet per day, twice a day applications of Dr. Lee's Minoxidil with Retin-A along with a bit of Dr. Lee's 12.5% Minoxidil to the frontal areas. I also use Nizorl 2% Shampoo [Dr. Lee's shampoo is basically the same]. Dr. Proctor's products are worth looking into. I'd stay away from everything else. Both Dr. Lee's and Dr. Proctor's web sites are excellent sources of truly honest info.

My morning Minoxidil appliction is always applied after shampooing to towel dried hair. This increases absorption. It also makes it easier to keep the stuff out of your hair, since it's wet and you can comb it up and out of the way. Let the Minoxidil dry to touch and you can style as usual. You'll find that you hair comes out much nicer using this method.

Matt,

Hey Relax.

I went through the same deal when I was in my mid 20s (I'm 39). The good news is there are a lot more options for you, than there were for me. When my hair line went form slightly receeding to begining to thin, Rogaine was only avialbe with 2% monoxidil (less than half the stregnth of today), you needed a Dr. to write a rx, and it was expensive as hell. But I didn't give a damn. I came up with the $ to see a doc, and purchase a rx. Rogaine (2%) ran about $65 a month. That was in the late 80's (that's like $100 today). Even with all the agrivation, I had success. It sent my hair loss in to a sort of remission, and even thickened it up slightly. I was happy, I didn't mind the recession, just the thinning, which was arrested.

Unfortunetly, grad school was expensive. So I had to choose between rogaine and food. Food won and 6 mo.s after I discontinued I lost a crap load of hair. After I graduated and got a real job I went back on Rogaine and continue to use it (5%) today. Unfortunetly, nothing out there can bring a dead follicle back to life and durring that hiatus, I had a bunch of follicles kick the bucket. I wish I'd never had to discontinue using Rogaine. So remember, it's extremely important not to start and stop with Rogaine!

I think most people using Rogaine at your stage/age tend to experince an arrest and sometimes some regrowth w/Rogaine. Old guys with shiney domes are usually out of luck. So my advice is to go to Wal-mart, buy 5% Rogaine and use it religously twice a day. It's only $20 and Upjohn put's a $5 coupon in each box. That's pretty damn cheap.

At this point don't bother with all these special monoxidill formulations. I've used some of them. Some w/azelic acid, some with Trotin (Retnin-A). (There are a boatload of others) Some have irritated my scalp and I belive one formula actually accelerated my hair loss. And propecia... don't even think about it! I tried it for a short period of time, my testicles ached, yeah I did grow some hair, but guess what didn't want to grow? I finally said to myself is it worth jepordizing my health and sex life. I discontinued and fortunetly everything returned to normal. Don't screw around with that stuff!! Castration will stop hair loss too, but is it worth it? Even i
